No Grains
Much has been written about grain in pet food & treats. It has been said that grains are on one hand a good source of nutrients & are on the other hand bad because dogs & cats were not originally designed to digest them properly. Some have described them as being non-nutritive fillers that contribute to obesity & diabetes & when cooked at high temperatures can have a chemical make-up that can cause cancer. Others have described them as being a necessary part of a natural diet. Confusing, huh?
Well, after years of experimenting with our recipes, we decided to eliminate grains completely from our treats to make them accessible to all pets so you don't have to worry anymore.
We Use Good Stuff
We are located in British Columbia, Canada & we source as much of our ingredients from small businesses also located there. We buy raw ingredients locally & cook & process in the same way as we would if we were baking or preparing a meal for ourselves. Our meats are free-range, non-medicated & come from humanely-treated animals. We offer hypoallergenic, wild & exotic options for animals sensitive to more common proteins. We're grateful to those animals that have given up their lives to become a food source & to show our appreciation & respect we use every possible part we can so that little goes to waste. We add herbs & supergreen foods to our products because of their natural healing properties while enhancing taste & aroma. We are proud to offer Remedies for Pets made with flower essences plus other homeopathic & herbal remedies to address physical, emotional & behavioural issues in pets.
No Additives, Preservatives, Chemicals or Fillers
Oh, & by the way we never use additives, preservatives, chemicals or fillers. Often, food additives, flavoring, & colors are added to pet food to appeal to the human eye but are of no nutritional value & may be harmful to pets. Many pets are allergic to foods containing chemical preservatives & experience symptoms such as excessive scratching & general icky-ness. It has been said that along with poor quality nutrients, the chemical additives in pet food have played a major part in the decline of pets' health. We never add these things to try to make our stuff look pretty. Our treats have a rich smell & natural appearance. They look how they look, naturally.
Why Our Treats Are Crunchy & Never Soft
People sometimes ask if we make any soft treats. The answer is "no" because in order to do so we would have to add a lot of sugar. Added sugars in pet foods help preserve food against decay & are used as an "humectant & plasticizer" or an ingredient that can give pet foods a soft moist texture. Sugar produces fluctuations in energy levels, causes stress on the pancreas & adrenals & over-stimulate the production of insulin of all which contribute to diabetes. It may increase the production of acidic digestive juices & dilute other nutrients in the food by providing "empty calories" devoid of vitamins, minerals, proteins, or fats. This interferes with a dog's ability to absorb the proteins, calcium & other minerals that are in the food. Moreover, it can inhibit the growth of useful intestinal bacteria. It's easy to see they would be undesirable ingredients & we never use them.
Always introduce unusual or unfamiliar foods gradually, adding small amounts to your pet's dinner until the new food is accepted. Abrupt changes can digestive upset so it is important to give your pet a few days to adapt.
